Memorial Day in the United States is the last Monday in May. This page lists the date for every year from 2025 through 2045, with the long-weekend window and a link to each year's May calendar.

The rule
Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday in May by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which took effect in 1971. Before that, it had been observed on May 30 every year. The current rule produces a date between May 25 and May 31 — five years out of every seven, the holiday falls on May 25, 26, 27, 28, or 29; in years where May 1 is a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, it shifts to May 30 or 31.
Distinguishing Memorial Day from Veterans Day
Both holidays honour US military service, but they are different in scope and date:
- Memorial Day — last Monday in May. Honours those who died in military service.
- Veterans Day — November 11 every year (with weekend observances shifted; see federal holidays observed vs actual). Honours all US military veterans, living and deceased.
Why the long weekend matters
- Travel. Memorial Day weekend is one of the three highest US travel weekends of the year, alongside Thanksgiving and Independence Day.
- Retail. The weekend is a major sales weekend for furniture, mattresses, and appliances — second only to Black Friday for some categories.
- Outdoor venues. Many US public pools, beach lifeguard stations, and seasonal camp programs open on Memorial Day weekend and close on Labor Day weekend, making the two holidays the de facto bookends of summer.
- Schools. Many US school districts have their last day of classes within a week or two of Memorial Day; school calendars for the next year often anchor on the holiday's date.
Common mistakes
- Confusing Memorial Day with Veterans Day. They honour different groups and fall on different dates.
- Assuming Memorial Day is always May 30. It hasn't been since 1971.
- Counting Memorial Day as a four-day weekend in working-day plans. Some employers add the Friday before, but it is not a federal holiday.
