Labor Day Dates 2025–2045
Last reviewed on May 4, 2026
Labor Day in the United States is the first Monday of September. It is a federal holiday honouring the US labour movement and the contributions of workers; it is also the unofficial end of summer in most of the country. This page lists every Labor Day date from 2025 through 2045, with the long-weekend window and a link to each year's September calendar.

The rule
Labor Day has been the first Monday in September since 1894, when it became a federal holiday. The first-Monday rule produces a date between September 1 and September 7. There are no observed-vs-actual shifts because the holiday is always on a Monday.
Most countries observe an equivalent holiday on May 1 (International Workers' Day). The US chose a September date partly to distance the holiday from the political associations of the May 1 observance, and partly because September aligned with existing labour-union parades in the northeastern United States in the 1880s.
Why the date matters for planning
- End of summer. US public pools, beach lifeguard stations, and seasonal venues typically close on Labor Day weekend, the bookend opposite Memorial Day weekend.
- Schools. Many US school districts have their first day of classes the day or week after Labor Day; some districts that start in mid-August still treat Labor Day weekend as a long break.
- Travel. One of the three peak US travel weekends of the year, alongside Memorial Day and Thanksgiving.
- Retail and fashion. The "no white after Labor Day" rule is mostly historical, but back-to-school shopping peaks the week before.
- Federal services. Federal employees, banks, USPS, and the Federal Reserve are closed on the Monday.
Labor Day vs International Workers' Day
Most of the world observes a workers' holiday on May 1. The US and Canada are the major exceptions, observing it on the first Monday in September instead. Functionally the holidays mark the same thing: a recognized day off honouring the labour movement.
Common mistakes
- Booking flights or hotels for Labor Day weekend without realising it overlaps with the busiest domestic travel period of late summer.
- Confusing Labor Day with International Workers' Day on May 1.
- Assuming Labor Day is the start of the school year — it varies considerably by state and district.
