The History of Juneteenth
📜 June 19, 1865
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that all enslaved people were free. The news came more than two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863 — it had simply not been enforced in Texas until Union troops arrived.

The name "Juneteenth" blends "June" and "nineteenth." Texas made it a state holiday in 1980, the first state to do so.
